Irine Vela | Artistic Director | CO-CEO

Irine is a multifaceted arts worker - a director, producer, composer, musician, sound designer, librettist and teaching artist.

Being a child of refugee and immigrant parents of mixed faiths – Muslim and Orthodox, informed an arts practice and a body of work that embodies the tensions and vitality that diverse and ghettoised voices and forms bring to the Australian arts.

She has collaborated with many of Australia’s finest performers, writers, directors and theatre companies and was a member of the founding ensemble of the seminal company Melbourne Workers Theatre.

Her work as producer and artistic director for Outer Urban Projects has resulted in many unique productions including 'Poetic License', Melbourne Writers Festival (2014), Darebin Arts (2015) fortyfivedownstairs (2017); 'Grand DiVisions – A Moved Urban Cantata', Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Festival (2015), Vessel Arts Censtre Melbourne (2017) Melbourne Fringe, and the The Audition (2019). Other notable collaborations and productions include Anthem for the 2019-2020 Melbourne, Sydney and Perth Festivals, 'Who's Afraid of the Working Class' (1998), ‘Do Not Go Gentle' (2010) and the music drama '1975-A Populist Opera' (2003) for which she also wrote the libretto. Her choral opera 'Little City' was acclaimed by both music and theatre critics and garnered her an Award from the Australian Music Centre for Best Composition by an Australian Composer. She is also the recipient of the Tropfest film award for Best Original Score. She was awarded a 2007 State Library fellowship to research and create the multi-media music drama 'Australia in Danger - A Slide Night'. She is a founding member of 'the haBiBis'. Their CD Intoxication received an ARIA award for Best World Music Album. Her film and television credits include: 'Head On' (feature film), 'Remembering Country' (documentary drama SBS), and the mini-series 'The Slap' (ABC). She received the 2012 APRA Screen Music Award for Best Soundtrack Album.
Ruci Kaisila | PERFORMER | WRITER

Ruci is a musically gifted performer in gospel and soul. From a young age, Ruci, along with her twin sister Joanne, developed a passion for music through singing and performing at their local church. With Ruci on piano and vocals and Joanne on guitar and vocals, the dynamic duo captivated audiences with their soulful ballads. Ruci has featured in many Outer Urban Projects works including GRAND DIVISIONS - A MOVED URBAN CANTATA presented at Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne International Arts Festival; Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre opening POETIC LICENSE, The Big Anxiety's TAKEOVER and HUME STUDIOS Residency projects, REVELATIONS recording project in URBAN STUDIO and 125BPM Concert at Melbourne Recital Centre.

Ruci worked alongside some of Australia’s finest writers and theatre artists in 'Anthem', an Australian work of scale supported through the Major Festivals Initiative, that toured nationally. Ruci works as a performer on Outer Urban Projects’ Fee for Service gigs and workshops and is a key artist and driver of KIN - Dudi & Jojo, a transnational Australian-Fijian performance and film work.
Joanne Kaisila | PERFORMER | WRITER

Joanne is a proud Fijian-Australian. She is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist performer – playing guitar, drums and bass. From a young age Joanne developed a passion for gospel and soul music and has performed in many seminal shows for Outer Urban Projects including GRAND DIVISIONS – A MOVED URBAN CANCATA at Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Festival; POETIC LICENSE opening at Darebin Arts Centre and HUME STUDIOS at Kangan Tafe. She recorded on REVELATIONS in URBAN STUDIO, performed in the TAKEOVER residency and is a key artist on the Australian/Fijian collaboration of the transnational performance and film project, KIN - Dudi & Jojo.

Joanne is also a videographer, making music clips for her community and is a regular performer on Outer Urban Projects’ Fee for Service program.
TUMELI TUQOTA | FILMMAKER

Tumeli Tuqota is an emerging Fijian filmmaker. He hails from Gasauva, Cakaudrove, Fiji with maternal links to Ha'a'ai, Tonga. He has fifteen years of experience in graphic design and motion design, 2D & 3D animation, filmmaking, and stick figure drawing. His film 'Soli Bula', an animated indigenous short film connected to Tumeli’s own heritage, looks at an alternate reality where Fiji tradition and culture was never eroded by colonialism.

Tumeli is collaborating as a filmmaker on Outer Urban Projects transnational Australian-Fijian performance and film project, the first project in the KIN series of works, KIN - Dudi & Jojo.

EMMANUEL KAISILA | MUSICIAN

Emmanuel is the youngest of the talented Kaisila family. He is also musically gifted through his family roots in gospel and soul. From a young age, Emmanuel, along with his twin sisters Joanne and Ruci, developed a passion for music through singing and performances at their local church. The trio captivate audiences with their soulful ballads. Emmanuel’s work with Outer Urban Projects includes 125 BMP, Melbourne Recital Centre, HUME STUDIOS, TAKEOVER residencies, and the upcoming transnational performance and film project, KIN - Dudi & Jojo.

Neisau Tuidraki | COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA CONSULTANT

Neisau Tuidraki is a former radio personality and TV producer who currently runs her own consultancy, 'Kokonati Talk', specialising in content development and building social brands. With over 20 years of experience in the media industry in Fiji, she has worked across TV, radio, and print, with a particular focus on online communications. Neisau is also an advocate for the creative arts and uses online platforms for digital advocacy. She recently completed hosting Season 1 of her podcast, 'Kokonati Talk.'

SAHRA DAVOUDI | ACTOR | WRITER

Sahra graduated in art and architecture at the University of Tehran with a Bachelor of Theatre Art in 2009. Sahra was involved in many student productions as a writer, actor, costume and set designer. Her dissertation thesis was an adaptation of the short story by Raymond Carver - ‘Neighbors’.

Sahra's first professional work as an actor and writer in Australia was with Outer Urban Projects' dance theatre work, VESSEL at the Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Fringe (2017). She then went on to work as a writer and actor in THE AUDITION, which premiered at La Mama in 2019 and was remounted in 2024 at La Mama Courthouse, The Bowery Theatre, and Bunjil Place.

Sahra was granted permanent residency in 2019 and has since become an Australian citizen. Sahra performed 'In The Mirror' by Mammad Aidani for La Mama Theatre and the interdisciplinary dance work 'Conquest of the Garden' by Nebahat Erpolat. Sahra is a co-writer and performer in Outer Urban Projects' upcoming new work of scale VIGIL. In 2024 Sahra graduated with a Masters of Theatre (Writing) with the Victorian College of the Arts.
BRYAN ANDY | WRITER

Bryan Andy is a Yorta Yorta man from Cummeragunja, NSW. Bryan is a freelance writer, radio broadcaster and theatre maker. He has been published with Lonely Planet, NITV, ABC, IndigenousX, the Guardian, Witness Performance and Meanjin. In 2021, 'Flock: First Nations Stories Then and Now' (edited by Ellen Van Neerven and published by University of Queensland Press) was released and featured a short story by Bryan titled 'Moama ('Place of the Dead')'. Bryan is currently completing a Masters of Theatre (Writing) at the Victorian College of the Arts/University of Melbourne and is a writer on Outer Urban Projects’ Major Work VIGIL.

Kush Kuiy | WRITER

Kush Kuiy is an independent producer, writer, and storyteller whose practice explores third-culture identity, shifting ideas of home, cultural inheritance, and belonging. Working across writing, performance, and research, she experiments with form as a way of finding the most honest and resonant way to tell a story.

Her recent work includes writing on VIGIL with Outer Urban Projects and contributing to large-scale visual outcomes for Viv’s Place, a social housing development in Melbourne’s south-east. She is currently developing a long-term research project, 'HOMECOMING', which traces personal and diasporic journeys between Australia and her family’s country of origin.

Alongside her artistic practice, Kush is the producer of the Rise of South Sudan Music and Arts Festival (ROSS MAF), a bi-annual community-led platform that centres South Sudanese voices, artistic practice, and collective imagination. Kush’s practice is shaped by a deep interest in building cultural and creative bridges between Australia and the African continent. With a background in international and community development, she approaches art as a relational and civic practice, one that holds space for complexity, intergenerational exchange, and dialogue across communities and borders.
PATRICIA CORNELIUS | WRITER

Patricia Cornelius is a founding member of Melbourne Workers Theatre. She’s a playwright, novelist, and film writer. Patricia has a fierce commitment to class and her work often examines the lives of the marginalised. Her work also includes dramaturgy and mentorship with young or new playwrights.. Patricia is the recipient of the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize, and the 2019 Green Room award for Life Achievement. She has written over 35 plays including:  'Shit', 'Big Heart', 'Savages', 'Slut, Love and The Call'. Patricia co-wrote the feature film adaptation 'Blessed', based on the play 'Who’s Afraid of the Working Class?'

Patricia is currently developing a feature film, 'Stolen', with director and co-writer, Catriona McKenzie. Patricia’s novel, 'My Sister Jill' (Random House) was published in 2002. Patricia was a writer on THE AUDITION and is writing on the upcoming VIGIL project. In 2023, her play 'Do Not Go Gentle' was presented by The Sydney Theatre Company and her play 'My Sister Jill' by the Melbourne Theatre Company.  
SAMAH SABAWI | WRITER

Samah Sabawi is an author, playwright, and poet. She is a recipient of multiple awards both nationally and internationally, including the 2020 Green Room Award for Best Writing for Independent Theatre for 'Them', the VCE award for Best Independent Production and Best Publication for 'Tales of A City By The Sea', the 2018 Palestine Book Award for the poetry anthology 'I Remember My Name: Poetry by Samah Sabawi, Ramzy Baround and Jehan Bseiso' and the Patrick O’Neil Award for the anthology 'Double Exposure: Plays of the Jewish and Palestinian Diasporas.'

Samah’s poetry is featured in leading journals, most recently, World Literature Today, her essays and political commentary is published in many books including Our Vision for Liberation: Engaged Palestinian Leaders and Intellectuals Speak Out, as well as in international media platforms such as the ABC, the BBC, AlJazeera, The Globe and Mail, AlAhram and the Sydney Morning Herald. Samah is joining Outer Urban Projects as a writer and mentor on the upcoming Major Work VIGIL.
Navera Ari | ACTOR

Navera Ari is a dynamic and multidisciplinary artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. With roots in Cairo, Egypt, and Sudanese & South-Sudanese heritage, they draw profound inspiration from African and African diasporic culture. Their primary mediums of acting and performance, coupled with writing, movement, creative direction and producing, expand their capacity and delivery of storytelling. Navera began their artistic journey in childhood, acting, writing and performing before officially entering the acting industry in 2018 and later beginning to share their work with a broader audience. Their work explores concepts around human nature and interaction, connection, communication, and how people act and react to stimuli.

As a queer, autistic, black person, Navera brings a unique perspective to their art, using their observations of the world to make sense of social conventions and human behaviour. An observer of life and creator of art, Navera is inspired by the pursuit of understanding, connection, and the innocence of being and existing authentically. Their work is a testament to their commitment to exploring and portraying the complexities of human experience through a multifaceted artistic lens. Navera is joining Outer Urban Projects as a performer on the upcoming Major Work VIGIL.
TARA JADE SAMAYA | CHOREOGRAPHER | DANCE ARTIST

Tara Jade Samaya is a queer eco feminist and a multidisciplinary artist that, teaches, creates and performs dance. Her engagement with Outer Urban expands from developing dance, film work and leading workshops and classes from 2018.

In 2025 Tara performed in Dancenorth's regional Australian 'Wayfinder' tour after relocating back to Australia from Europe where she rehearsal directed at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and danced with Staatsballett Berlin under directorship of Sasha Waltz and Johannes Ohman. She is also working with artists Jefta Van Dinter, Emmanual Gat, Dasniya Summer, Jan Martens, Aoi Nakamura and Esteban Lecoq; and created production ‘I’m here now’ with Film maker Pippa Samaya for the Komische Oper Berlin.

In 2019, Tara won Helpmann and Greenroom Award for Best Female Dancer in Australia for her work in Chunkymove's 'Common Ground (Anouk Van Dijk)', and was previously nominated for Helpmann and Greenroom Awards in 2017, 2012 & 2010. Over the course of her career she has worked with many companies, organisations and independent creators including Chunkymove, Australian Dance Theatre, Douglas Wright, Prue Lang, Lina Limosani and was appointed Chunky Move’s Artistic Associate 2016. Her film collaborative ‘The Samaya Wives’ with partner Pippa have national and international acclaim for their short experimental movement films, screening across festivals, galleries and independent cinemas worldwide. For Outer Urban Projects, Tara has created choreography and taught for its ensemble of young dancers and community members at Signal, in Chunky Move Studios, at Transit Dance. She was a key artist on the Outer Urban Projects’ VIGIL dance films during lockdowns and a key choreographer/dancer and collaborator on the upcoming VIGIL project.
TAMARA BOUMAN | DANCER

Tamara is a proud descendant of the Biripi Peoples of the mid-New South Wales Coast. Tamara trained in classical ballet and commercial dance at leading schools in Sydney. In 2019, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) from the Victorian College of the Arts. Her artistry spans diverse performance and creative practices, encompassing contemporary dance, ballet, performance art, children’s theatre, circus and harness work, contact improvisation, film, puppeteering, and physical theatre.

Tamara has collaborated with an impressive array of artists and companies, including Stephanie Lake, Alisdair MacIndoe, Ngioka Bunda-Heath, Vicki Van Hout, Legs on the Wall, and Na Djinang Circus. In 2022, she was a company member with Sydney Dance Company and has since performed in numerous independent projects and productions, working with Moorambilla Voices, Ginevra Cicatello, Karul Projects, and others. Recent highlights of Tamara’s career include performing in 'The Ring Cycle' with Dancenorth and Opera Australia, participating in Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Horizon season at the Sydney Opera House in 2024, and making her international touring debut with 'THAW' by Legs on the Wall. She began 2025 by performing in 'Manifest', a groundbreaking new work by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Larbi’s first Australian premiere, and followed that by joining Bangarra Dance Theatre as a company Dancer from March 2025. Driven by a deep passion for cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations, Tamara uses dance as a powerful medium to honour her culture, deepen her connection to the land, and engage meaningfully with her collaborators and audiences.
Georgia Rudd | DANCER

Georgia is an independent contemporary dancer, performer and teacher originating from Aotearoa (New Zealand). She is now living and working in Naarm (Melbourne). Prior to this she was part of the creation in many works with various artists during 6 years with Dancenorth Australia under the directorship of Kyle Page and Amber Haines including; Melanie Lane, Lucy Guerin, Stephanie Lake, Alisdair MacIndoe, Gideon Obarzanek, Lee Serle, Jo Lloyd and Ross McCormack, performing and touring works at festivals nationally and internationally.

Georgia was the first inaugural recipient of the Naarm/Solo dance exchange where she is working with Indonesian artist Riyo Tulus Pernando to develop work across countries and cultures. She has choreographed 3 short works, ‘Sifting Through All The Forgets', 'Construction and Contemplation' and 'Together Indecision' for Dancenorth’s annual Tomorrow Maker’s seasons 2017-2020. Currently, Georgia continues to refine her practice where the body is the basis for questioning, processing and transformation. Her embodiment practices honour the complexity and intelligence of the body and its ability to reflect the world in which it is in. As a dance artist and performer, she has contributed to the development of the company’s major work VIGIL.
Kamarra Bell-Wykes | ACTOR

Kamarra Bell-Wykes (Yagera/Butchulla) is a theatre maker and arts specialist working across professional, academic and community arts sectors, including Queensland Theatre's current resident First Nations dramaturge, ILBIJERRI Theatre’s Education Manager and Creative Director from 2014-2019 and Malthouse Resident Artist 2020-2022. In 2022 Kamarra joined forces with Carly Sheppard as Co-Artistic Directors of A Daylight Connection, a motley crew of independent theatre-makers dedicated to smashing performance binaries; their credits include 'Chase' (Malthouse/Hot House), 'A Nightime Travesty' (Yirramboi/AsiaTOPA/Malthouse/Kia Mau) and 'Eclipse' (Rising) a collaboration with First Nation Queens Cerulean and Stone Motherless Cold.

In 2021 Kamarra was awarded the Patrick White Award for 'Whose Gonna Love ‘Em? I am that I AM' (FCAC/ ILBIJERRI). Kamarra has co-authored a range of award-winning arts-education resources including Teaching First Nations Drama Concepts in the Classroom and Healing Stories – Australian First Nations Theatre for Health Equity. Kamarra’s other significant theatre credits include 'House Arrest' (Yirramboi/Malthouse) 'A Wake - A Woke Mob' (MTC/ILBIJERRI), '37' (MTC), 'Romeo and Julie' (Red Stitch), 'Because the Night' (MALTHOUSE), 'The Score', 'Scar Trees', 'Viral', 'North West of Nowhere', 'Body Armour', 'Chopped Liver', 'Shrunken Iris' (ILBIJERRI), 'Crying Shame' (NEXT WAVE) and 'Mother’s Tongue' (YIRRA YAAKIN).
NYAWUDA CHUOL | ACTOR

Nyawuda Chuol is a South Sudanese-Australian actor. Nyawuda graduated from a two-year intensive acting program at the New York Film Academy, Australia with a 3-week scholarship at the New York Film Academy Los Angeles. In 2015, Nyawuda starred in the short, 'Everything We Wanted' by award-winning director Goran Stolevski which earned a BAFTA accredited premier at the London Short Film Festival and also a screened at the Tally Shorts in Florida and Los Angeles CineFest.

In 2016, Nyawuda starred as the emotionally brave Alimah in 'Displaced', telling the stories of young refugees women being raped and married off in war-torn countries, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival. Recently she completed shooting episodes for the Melbourne web series comedy 'Fresh' that premiered at Series Mania Melbourne and the LA Film Festival. Her latest short film will premiere at the Trenton Film Festival.
Sermsah Bin Saad | ACTOR

As a multifaceted and multi-tasking personality, Sermsah Bin Saad's name in the Indigenous community is synonymous with dance, choreography, opera, theatre, fashion and modelling as well as the festival circuit, and television. In the non-Indigenous community he is probably more known for cracking into the tough Top 14 on 2008's 'So You Think You Can Dance', overall in the Top 7 males of Australia. He also led the dancers in memorable musical numbers in the crowd-pleasing, mega hit movie 'Bran Nue Dae'. When Sermsah is not too busy setting the world on fire, he is as equally impressive on a technical level in casting direction, production management and script development.

Sermsah values his heritage above all. He exercises this imagination by capturing, and celebrating the Aboriginal essence and its spiritual themes in fashion design, photography, humanitarian rights, sociological interest, as well as his own cultural history. He believes in 'Liyarn Ngarn' a saying springing from his Saltwater Country hometown of Derby/Broome in far-north Western Australia meaning 'coming together of the spirit'. Also affectionately known as Suri, this young-at-heart and award-winning artist aims to entertain with style and incredible magnetism. As writer mentor, Sermsah has contributed to the development of Outer Urban Projects' work VIGIL.
Christos Tsiolkas | WRITER AND MENTOR

Christos is the author of the novels 'The In-Between', 'Loaded', 'The Jesus Man', 'Dead Europe', 'The Slap', 'Barracuda', 'Damascus' and the short story collections 'Merciless Gods'. He is also a playwright, scriptwriter, and a film reviewer for The Saturday Paper. His other work includes a monograph on Patrick White as part of the Writers-on-Writers series and the collaborative dialogue, 'Jump Cuts: An Autobiography', written with Sasha Soldatow. His fiction including 'The Slap' has been adapted for screen. Christos was a writer and mentor on Outer Urban Projects’ work THE AUDITION and is a writing mentor on the upcoming work VIGIL. He is also Outer Urban Projects’ patron. The adaptation of Christos’ novel 'Loaded' premiered at the Beckett Theatre in the Malthouse, Melbourne (2023).

TAJ ALDEEB | MUSICIAN | COMMUNITY ARTIST FACILITATOR

A multi-hyphenate, Taj Aldeeb is a truly exciting performer of Syrian heritage. Motivated by her own journey, Taj explores stories through collaboration and experimentation, that demonstrate the challenges, triumphs, and diverse experiences of migration through sound, stage, screen, radio, and dance. She holds a Bachelor of Music (Piano) from Monash University and a Bachelor of Design (Digital Media) from RMIT. Taj is a radio presenter at ABC Classic, a pre-concert speaker and production assistant with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Front of House with Arts Centre Melbourne, and Head of Percussion (2024) with Melbourne Youth Orchestra.

Taj performs regularly with multicultural bands that blend Arabic, Latin, and alternative influences, appearing at venues ranging from local community spaces to festivals and the Melbourne Recital Centre. Her acting credits include the SBS series Four Years Later (dir. Mohini Herse and Fadia Abboud), short films The Fall (lead role, dir. Mert Berdilek, Dendy Awards finalist), Get to the Wire (dir. Paul Burns), and stage roles in THEM (dir. Bagryana Popov) and Zaffé (dir. Stéphanie Ghajar). A passionate advocate for refugee and migrant communities, Taj received the 2021 Young Leader Award for her advocacy and youth mentorship work. Taj is a 2025 Melbourne Fringe Awards judge on the panel for the Music category.
JOSHINDER CHAGGAR | DANCER

Joshinder Chaggar is an award-winning dance theatre artist & filmmaker. She is currently in the final stages of a PhD doctorate, where her research intersects her intercultural identity with storytelling. Her solo dance work, created through the PhD, 'Dancing in Infinite Worlds', won Best in Dance & Physical Theatre, at Melbourne Fringe 2024.

Joshinder has worked in the dance and theatre industry for the past 17 years, across Melbourne, Sydney & Pakistan. Her work is influenced by physical theatre, Indian folk, Indian classical dance & experimental movement. She has participated in festivals locally and internationally: the Edinburgh showcase 2017, Mapping Melbourne 2017, Karachi Biennale 2017, Kunstareal Fest 2017 (Munich), Emerge in Yarra (2018), India @Mindil 2019 (Darwin), NAPA International theatre festival (Karachi 2019), IndiaFest 2022 (Townsville), Castlemaine festival 2023 & FRAME festival - Maloya Moshpit and AsiaTOPA 2024. She is the recipient of a collaborative Green Room Award (2022), Best Cabaret, For The Ensemble Work 'Takeback!'. Her directorial film debut – 'More Than Cute', a 15-minute short film that unpacks age, and highlights how dance can help form communities, won Best Doc at The Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival 2022, in New York, and screened widely at film festivals across the globe. She is currently in post-production for her feature documentary, 'Crones'.
TARIRO MAVONDO | ACTOR | COMMUNITY ARTIST FACILITATOR

Tariro is a multi-hyphenated artist, a natural born trailblazer and creative advocate for cultural equity in arts policy, purpose and practice. Most recently she co-directed The Hate Race (The Malthouse Theatre) in sell out season, 2024.

Tariro has assistant directed Fate (STAGE: Western Edge Youth Arts Inc and Massive Hip Hop Choir, 2013), and co-directed Billy Possible (STAGE: Metanoia Theatre, 2014), Scheherazade (STAGE: Western Edge Youth Arts Inc, 2014), Iago (STAGE: Western Edge Youth Arts Inc, 2014),

and Caliban (STAGE: Western Edge Youth Arts Inc at The Malthouse 2016), and directed Future Echoes (STAGE: Art Centre Melbourne and Western Edge’s Edge Ensemble, 2019), Signal Summer; Theatre (STAGE: Western Edge Youth Arts Inc and Signal, 2020), and co-directed The Retreat (SCREEN/STAGE: Western Edge Youth Arts Inc;). Tariro was appointed co- Artistic Director/CEO, 2019, Western Edge Youth Arts Inc. In collaboration with the Australian Art Orchestra Tariro Mavondo has been awarded Work of the Year: Electroacoustic /Sound Art, Closed Beginnings, 2021, APRA AMCOS and Nominated Best Jazz Album, Closed Beginnings, 2021, ARIA Music Awards and the recipient of The Women in Theatre Program for Artistic Direction, 2020, Melbourne Theatre Company and awarded a VicArts Grant, We Too Roar, 2021, Creative Victoria and was The Dangers of a Single Story was published, Growing Up African in Australia, 2019, Black Inc Books. Tariro founded Africa’s Got Talent Australia and was a co-founding member of Centre for Poetics and Justice and Still Waters; African Storytelling Collective. Tariro is also an internationally award-winning actress and voice over artist who has worked with Melbourne Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company, Black Swan, Street Theatre in Canberra, Belvoir, Bell Shakespeare, Thomas The Tank Engine, PwC, BMW, AFLW, La Trobe University etc. Towards the end of 2021 Tariro left her dream job to get lost in tropical jungles around the world for a year and co-mingle with wild natural territories and re-member the vernaculars and ontologies of soils, rivers, waterfalls, frogs, birds, tree branches, ocean, plants, flowers, skies. After travelling she lived in Barbados an island in the Caribbean for a year.
Natasha Lakkis (nee Hanna) | MUSICIAN

Natasha is fast becoming a well-known name in Melbourne’s orchestra scene. The eldest of 8 children of a musical family from Roxburgh Park, she began playing violin at 3 years of age. In 2014 Natasha was the principal 2nd violinist for the Melbourne Youth Orchestra and collaborated with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra on their tour to New Zealand. She was violin concertmaster in 2012 & 2013 for Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight conducted by John Foreman.

For Outer Urban Projects Natasha has performed in URBAN CHAMBER - BEYOND at The Salon, Melbourne Recital Centre, Melbourne Festival, GRAND DIVISIONS - A MOVED URBAN CANTATA at Fairfax Studios, Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Festival, and is lead performer in the Outer Urban Projects STRING QUARTET. Natasha is the lead artist on Outer Urban Projects’ Triple Violin Concerto collaboration with The Impossible Orchestra. Natasha will take part in Episode 2 of KIN in 2026, KIN – The Hannas.
Josef Hanna | MUSICIAN

Josef began playing the violin at the age of 4. Josef was raised and educated in Roxburgh Park. His past teachers include Helge Thelen, Elizabeth Sellars and Roy Theaker. Josef is currently studying under Sophie Rowell.

Josef has been a member of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra since 2012. In 2015, he was appointed the position of Concertmaster.

Josef has performed at various venues with MYO including Deakin Edge - Federation Square, Iwaki Auditorium, Hawthorn Arts Centre, Windsor Hotel and Melbourne Recital Centre. Josef is currently 1st violinist of the MYO String Quartet. Josef performed in Outer Urban Projects GRAND DIVISIONS, URBAN CHAMBER - BEYOND, LIBERIAN BOY and gigs regularly with Outer Urban Projects and is part of the Outer Urban String Quartet. Josef will take part in Episode 2 of KIN in 2026, KIN – The Hannas.
Karla Hanna | MUSICIAN

Karla Hanna is a Lebanese-Australian artist. She is a professional violinist with extensive experience in performance and teaching for over 20 years.

Karla has worked as a freelance musician, performing with orchestras such as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, as well as working regularly with different Chamber groups around Australia. She studied at the Australian National Academy of Music from 2015-2017 and is currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Music.

During her time with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra, she collaborated with Outer Urban Projects on various occasions and performed with two of her siblings on a recording of Olli Mustonen’s triple violin concerto with a small orchestra. Karla will take part in Episode 2 of KIN in 2026, KIN – The Hannas.
Brett Kelly | CONDUCTOR

Brett Kelly has regularly conducted the Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Tasmanian, Queensland and West Australian symphony orchestras, The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and Dunedin’s Southern Sinfonia.
He has conducted for Victorian Opera and been resident conductor of Chamber Made Opera. He has been featured on recordings for NAXOS, Tall Poppies, and ABC Classics with his recording of the Rodrigo Guitar Concertos featuring Slava and Leonard Grigoryan nominated for an Aria Award.

His conducting of 'The Hive' by Nicolas Vines for Chamber Made Opera was nominated for a Green Room Award as Best Conductor of Opera.

Brett has conducted the scores of many feature films including 'Beneath Hill 60', Baz Luhrmann’s epic, 'Australia' and 'Happy Feet II' and 7 film scores by David Hirschfelder. In 1989 he founded the Academy of Melbourne which, over some 15 years, became regarded as one of Australia’s most outstanding chamber ensembles. Committed to new Australian music, Brett has been a core member of 3 influential Australian contemporary music ensembles – Flederman, The Seymour Group and Elision and has played or conducted the premieres of over 300 new works. Brett is an experienced radio broadcaster, was Principal Trombonist with the Melbourne Symphony until 2019 and holds the position of Music Director of the Melbourne Youth Orchestras. For Outer Urban Projects, Brett has conducted 125 BPM including the Hip Hop Harp Concerto at the Melbourne Recital Centre. He will conduct Ollie Mustonen’s Triple Violin Concerto as part of Outer Urban Projects Melbourne Youth Orchestra collaboration.
ELENA KATS-CHERMIN AO | COMPOSER

One of Australia’s foremost contemporary composers, Elena Kats-Chernin's vibrant and distinctive music across all genres has reached millions worldwide.

Among her extensive oeuvre are works in nearly all genres: instrumental solo and ensemble pieces, symphonic, chamber orchestral and concertos, for plays, ballet and musical theatre, choral and other vocal music for such organisations as Gondwana Voices, Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australian World Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestras of Adelaide, Tasmania, Melbourne, Western Australia and Sydney,

the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, London Philharmonic, as well as the opera houses of Berlin, Antwerp, Stuttgart, Zurich as well as Luxembourg Philharmonie and the Opera Australia. She has collaborated with well-known artists such as Meryl Tankard, Barrie Kosky, Richard Tognetti, Michael Collins, Katie Noonan, Tamara-Anna Cislowska, Benjamin Northey, Marin Alsop, and many more. In the recent ABC Classic 100 Piano Countdown three of Elena’s pieces were voted for and made it into the top 100: Butterflying, Russian Rag and Eliza Aria. These were played by composer along with Tamara-Anna Cislowska and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, televised by the ABC TV in June 2025.   EKC’s recent score for the Golden Globe/Oscar-nominated and award-winning Claymation Memoir of a Snail from Oscar-winning Melbourne director Adam Elliot was nominated for AACTA 2025 in the category Best Score for a Feature Film. 
Baris Ulusoy | FILMMAKER

Building working relationships with a range of emerging and diverse filmmakers in Naarm (Melbourne) led to Barış founding Near Dark, an independent production company and creative collective. He has established an independent slate of work that has engaged with national and international film festivals, as well as enabled further development and production opportunities for a diverse collective of creators and technicians.

Barış is currently working with various community arts and media organisations (Co-Curious, Cinespace), facilitating and developing program and fundraising strategies at the cross-section of industry and community. Seeking to develop and exploit alternative pathways into the media industry for screen practitioners from historically underrepresented backgrounds while practising his own craft as a producer, director and editor. He continues to develop and produce narrative and factual content to capture the changing face of the Australian immigrant identity through creative and compelling character driven storytelling.
Milad Norouzi | WRITER | MUSICIAN | PERFORMER

Milad is a rapper, singer-songwriter and performer. Milad’s creative life began in the underground rap studios of Tehran. He joined Outer Urban Projects in 2015 after attending its remount of POETIC LICENSE at Darebin Arts Centre. As a writer/performer/actor he has written and performed in Outer Urban Projects' major works POETIC LICENSE at fortyfivedownstairs (2017), GRAND DIVISONS - A MOVED URBAN CANTATA at the Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne (2015), LIBERIAN BOY (2018), and THE AUDITION, which premiered at La Mama in 2019 and was remounted in 2024 at La Mama Theatre, The Bowery Theatre, and Bunjil Place. Milad has also recently recorded his moody underground EP THE LITTLE LIONHEART in the company’s URBAN STUDIO.

VAHIDEH EISAEI | MUSICIAN

Vahideh grew up in an artistic family with a love for arts, music and poetry. She completed high school at Tehran Music College, studied her Bachelor of Music in Tehran University of Fine Arts and pursued postgraduate studies in Master of Music at the University of Western Australia.

She has over 12 years of professional musical experience as a music performer. Playing the Kanun (a string instrument), Vahideh has performed in different ensembles in Europe, the Middle East and Australia including, Mona Foma Festival, Multicultural Music Festival Canberra, Sarv Ensemble Australian Tour and Chakam Australian Tour.

Vahideh is founder of Baazavaz, a creative hub that aims to bring artists together and create multidisciplinary forms of art. Her love of children’s music led her to work with toddlers, preschool and school-age children. Currently, Vahideh is actively working in Prevention of Violence Against Women and their children space with Multicultural Centre for Women's Health.  Vahideh has performed as a musician in THE AUDITION, which premiered at La Mama in 2019 and was remounted in 2024 at La Mama Theatre, The Bowery Theatre, and Bunjil Place. In addition, Vahideh is a creative development artist for VIGIL and upcoming work LULLABY as part of URBAN STUDIO.
EVRIPIDES EVRIPDOU | MUSICIAN

Evripides was born in Cyprus and migrated to Australia at the age of 15 years old. Since the age of 6, he has studied mandolin, piano, clarinet, saxophone, guitar and bass and completed courses in Classical and Jazz guitar and composition.

Influenced by the strong rhythms and melodies of a Mediterranean culture, the freedom of Jazz, the discipline and elegance of Classical and Flamenco styles of music, and his deep experiences as a long-term meditator, he has found his 'sound' and fulfillment in expression through his original compositions which he adapts for film, TV, DVD, video games and multimedia.

Evripides has gained a reputation as an inventive and electrifying player by taking bass playing to the extreme through innovative use of his 6 and 7 string basses and a variety of electronic effects.
Danche Sulejman | MUSICIAN

Danche Sulejman has always been surrounded by music from a young age. Danche started practicing keyboard at the age of 8, but his training and motivation really started when he was 15, and at the time travelled to Macedonia to join a band. Ever since then, he has been traveling back and forth to Macedonia to keep in touch and be welcomed with open arms by his family and childhood friends. Danche's most recent visit to Macedonia was in 2018. During this period, he had the opportunity to join up with a well-known band called Orkestar Evropa. Danche has been a key artist on Outer Urban Projects’ URBAN STUDIO series of works and will take part in Episode 3 of Outer Urban Projects' series KIN, with KIN – The Sulejmans.

TANGATA TUPOU | VOCALIST

Tangata Tupou began singing at a young age. Born to a musically gifted family, Tangata's passion for music started in the family living room and at her local church. Tangata's Cook Island heritage has a huge influence on her style of music. She and sister Fakaoho have been performing together for many years. Both artists learned how to play musical instruments and sing from their dad. She is an independent vocalist, performing with sister Fakaoho and cousins, Ruci, Joanne, and Emmanuel Kaisila. Tangata is a recipient of a Hume Art Award.

Tangata has featured in many Outer Urban Projects works including GRAND DIVISIONS - A MOVED URBAN CANTATA at Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Festival, opening of POETIC LICENSE Darebin Arts Centre, TAKEOVER and HUME STUDIOS residencies, REVELATIONS recording project in URBAN STUDIO. Tangata is a key artist on Episode 4 of the KIN series of works - KIN - The Tupous, which explores the role of Cook Island language and music in cultural preservation, and will be in development and production in 2027.
Fakaoho Tupou | VOCALIST

Blending Māori and Pacific Islander influences with her love for Gospel and Hip Hop, Fakaoho Tupou is an asset to any concert or performance. She is a musically gifted singer with a strong following in the Pasifika and gospel community and is a recipient of a Hume Art Award. Fakaoho has featured in many Outer Urban Projects works - URBAN CHAMBER BEYOND at the Melbourne Recital Centre, the opening for POETIC LICENSE at the Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre, LIBERIAN BOY, REVELATIONS in URBAN STUDIO, HUME STUDIOS and TAKEOVER residencies and GRAND DIVISONS – A MOVED URBAN CANTATA at Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Festival.

Fakaoho is a key artist on Episode 4 of the KIN series of works - KIN - The Tupous.
Mary Sitarenos | ACTOR

Mary Sitarenos is a Theatre Director and Maker and the Co-Artistic Director of Liminal Theatre and Performance. Mary is an actor and director who has worked for over 20 years in alternative and mainstream theatre, film and television. Some of her theatre credits include Tes Lyssiotis' 'The Forty Lounge Cafe' and Tom Lindstrom's 'Heroic Measures' (Playbox); 'Too Young For Ghosts' (Janis Balodis) and 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' (Melbourne Theatre Company); Jean-Pierre Mignon's 'Chekhov Trilogy' (Anthill); and 'Blood Moon' (Tes Lyssiotis), 'Song of Songs' (Robert Draffin), 'Pericles and The Idiot' (Theatreworks). She performed in and co-wrote with composer Richard Vella the contemporary opera 'Last Supper'. It toured Japan in 1995 and had seasons in Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania.

For the Melbourne Festival she appeared in Paul Carter, David Chesworth and Ariette Taylor’s 'Sabat Jesus' (Playbox). Mary’s previous work with Jenny Kemp includes 'The White Hotel' and 'Good Night Sweet Dreams' with her husband, the photographer and writer Peter Lyssiotis. Mary contributed to Outer Urban Projects’ creative development of VIGIL in 2021 and performed in THE AUDITION, which premiered at La Mama in 2019 and was remounted in 2024 at La Mama Theatre, The Bowery Theatre, and Bunjil Place.
Miguel Rios & Meredith O’Shea | PHOTOGRAPHY | VIDEOGRAPHY

Miguel and Meredith are partners in work and life. Multi-award winner photographer and film maker Meredith O'Shea, and musician/film maker Miguel Rios are visual story tellers. Together they create film clips, documentaries and editorial videos.

Meredith's work as a photojournalist has brought heartbreaking and inspiring stories of human struggle and triumph to the front pages of The Sunday Age for over 15 years, featuring regularly with other media outlets including Guardian Australia.

Meredith's work has been exhibited internationally to great acclaim. Miguel brings over 25 years of rich experience to the production team. Miguel is a multi skilled musician, song writer and recording artist. Miguel's early work life as an acupuncturist informs his art making with a sensitivity and a deep understanding of the human condition.
LARA WEEK | PRODUCER

Lara Week is a designer for performance and creative producer. Recent projects include Zaffé by Stéphanie Ghajar & Collaborators (2020-24; co-creative producer, co-designer, co-devisor; premiere Malthouse Tower, return season Arts House), Plant a Promise by Henrietta Baird (2022-25, designer, premiere Bangarra Studio, Sydney Festival) and THEM by Samah Sabawi dir. Bagryana Popov (2019-22, creative producer and designer premiere, Best Independent Production Green Room awards, tour co-producer with La Mama and Critical Stages). With St Martins, she has produced The Word (2024), Gene Tree: Listen. Now. Again (2022, winner 2 x Green Room awards including Best Production), an interactive performance adventure led by children and young people through Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, as well as the 2025 concept tour to Darwin in collaboration with Corrugated Iron Youth Arts and more than 50 children and young people (Winner, Darwin Fringe Award for Excellence in Community Arts).

Kate Gillick | Executive Producer | CO-CEO

Kate brings over 40 years of professional practice across theatre, film and TV to Outer Urban Projects. She has trained and worked as an actor, writer, dramaturg, director and producer. She freelanced for many years working in Fringe, with Melbourne Workers Theatre and in TV drama and is an AFTRS screenwriting graduate. Her documentary credits include SBS/CAAMA 'Minmaku Way' (writer), ‘A Few Old Blokes' (writer/director) MIFF and the SBS, ATOM award winner and Dendy nominated 'Remembering Country' (co-writer/director).

Kate was Artistic Co-Director and Creative Producer with the Anti Racism Action Band (A.R.A.B) performing arts program from 2004-12. During this time A.R.A.B produced over 40 projects, performed at 400 gigs and events and played to a total audience of over 100,000. Kate’s wide ranging collaborative and organisational skills and commitment to art that reflects the stories of working class and disenfranchised people has seen her evolution as Executive Producer of Outer Urban Projects. She completed her Masters in Screenwriting at VCA, Melbourne University, winning an excellence award for her major project.
